While reading our local homeschooling groups' newsletters, I was recently struck by how fortunate we are to live in this area. The wide variety of activities and happenings offers us tremendous choices each summer. In a past Happy Trails, I praised Charlottesville's Recreation and Leisure Services Department for their high quality gymnastics, swimming and summer Art Camp programs. This summer, my kids are experiencing yet another wonderful program through the city. Tennis Clinic. Taught by Coach Chris Cubbage, who retired from professional tennis after 18 years as both a player and a coach. He is now an Instructional Assistant in a self-contained E.D. class within the Charlottesville City Schools. His expertise shows. The man is amazing. He engages the kids well, teaches them correct scoring, proper playing procedure and helpful practice skills. He coaches in a very entertaining way. More importantly, he is clear with the rules, fair, and swift in discipline. This is nothing like the tennis lessons I experienced in my high school years. He has created clever games that make it fun, increase skills, and keep the kids focused. Tennis Clinic lasts an hour and begins at 8:30 a.m. for my younger kids (8-10 year olds) and 9:30 a.m. for my oldest (11-13 year olds). With the summer heat, this time of day is perfect! My kids are in the Beginners Class but he also offers Intermediate and Advanced classes for kids in the 8-13 year old range. Classes are small, with about 10 kids in each age group. When we signed up for the class (which runs daily for two weeks), I wondered if we would keep it up for the whole time - every day for two weeks is a big commitment for us. My children actually look forward to going, and it seems all the kids in the class love it because the attendance has remained high. If you find it is too late to sign up for the next series of lessons this year, keep Tennis Clinic in mind for next summer. This top-notch program charges all of two unopened cans of tennis balls per child. Imagine that...a first class program that is even affordable. Check it out. QUESTIONS...COMMENTS...IDEAS...
